It's good to be back in Manila after my 5-day vacation in Malaysia. During my stay, I found out that Malaysian food and I don't get along very well. I still prefer the good old Chinese cuisine even if I eat it along the side walk of Jalan Pataling (Pataling Street). Restoran Dan Nasi Ayam Kam Kee was recommended to us by the taxi driver who drove us to the said Chinese night market.
Restoran Dan Nasi Ayam Kam Kee

The only instruction we got was to look for the restaurant beside a laundry shop located at the end of the street. The driver said that it served good food. The direction was very vague but we eventually found the elusive restaurant.
Sweet & Sour Prawn RM 20 (PhP 280)

Sweet & Sour Prawn was definitely my favorite. At only PhP 280, this order was more than enough for my two friends and I.
Squid with Salted Egg RM 15 PhP 210

I was not so sure how the salted egg will blend well with squid but this dish is definitely a must-try! There's a crunch in every bite.
Yang Chow Fried Rice RM 7 (PhP 98)

Although really oily, the Yang Chow Fried Rice tasted really good. Just pray that you don't suffer from heart attack while eating lol
Guess which drink was mine?

I told you we ate along the side walk lol

stores just across Restoran Dan Nasi Ayam Kam Kee

One of the stores across Restoran Dan Nasi Ayam Kam Kee is Kedai Buju, its address is No. 59 Jan Sultan.
Rainbow Laundry found beside Restoran Dan Nasi Ayam Kam Kee

Diners at Restoran Dan Nasi Ayam Kam Kee were spilling over to the storefront of Rainbow Laundry Shop.

Our first night ended with happy tummies and it only costs us PhP 200 each. I will tell you more about my Malaysia trip in the succeeding entries.

or: tasty Malaysia.

image

I got up quite early and went to Cindarella's place, but it was closed. So, I had to find an alternative breakfast and I just wandered around. I went to a restaurant which was quite busy and I tried Roti Canai for the first time.

It is a kind of pancake, mine was filled with an egg, and it is served with a curry sauce. You just pull the pancake apart and dip it into the sauce. It is so wonderful, delicious. It is quite greasy, though.

image

It is really amazing to watch the guy how he makes the rotis, the way he stretches the dough so that it gets very thin and large, how he opens an egg, how he pours the oil over the roti.
It is a nice relaxing place. I think I will come here more often. They have various kinds of dishes, among them Nasi Lemak, which I have to try soon.

I think I will stay here in Melaka for a while. It is a lovely little town. At the weekend it is quite busy with tourists, but I can imagine that it is calmer during the weekdays.

image

When I left the restaurant it started to rain. I saw a shopping mall and went inside.
To be true I spent quite a long time in that mall. I sat down in a café, read a lot about Malaysia, thought about where to go next. I was pretty lazy. I thought about how to improve my blood sugar values again, thought about all the things I want to do right now and in the future. And all the other more or less important things that bother me right now.

For lunch I went to a small place with a buffet. I had chicken in a spicy sauce with fried egg and baked eggplant. It was delicious. Yummy.

image

The first days I didn't really like the food I had here, because they were so sweet. They add a lot of sugar, or prepare the dishes with Gula Melaka, red palm sugar. In Indonesia it is called Gula Merah, red sugar.

image

I also made my second durian experience today. I had durian puffs. They were really tasty. Actually I love the taste when it us not too intense. The puffs are filled with a durian custard. They were cold and not too sweet, kind of refreshing.

image

I enjoyed this day, it really felt like a saturday. I bought quite a lot, something what I do quite seldomly. I want to throw away some things, because after four month many clothes do not look very nice anymore, like worn-out. But I didn't really want to buy things in the expensive countries. So, this was a good opportunity.
When I came home it was late afternoon and the owner of my guesthouse invited all his western guests to bring us to a place where we could see the sunset. He drove us there and when we got off he said he would pick us up in one hour. We were a bit surprised, left alone almost in the middle of nowhere, but there was a mosque which was illuminated and so I took a lot of fotos while it got darker and darker.
I talked to an Argentinian guy who stays at my guesthouse as well.
I enjoyed it pretty much.

image

image

Back in the guesthouse I tried to bring some order into all my stuff. I through away some things to make space in my backpack for my new clothes. Still I don't know what to do with my winter clothes. I love my blue coat, but it takes a lot of space. But I think I will carry it with me the next two months.

Walaupun dimakan ketika sejuk, namun dapat dirasakan inilah nasi ayam yang benar benar memenuhi selera saya. Memang sangat sangat sedap. Hmm harganya pun memang berpadanan. Punya teringin nak makan, sampai tak sempat nak dipanaskan dalam microvave. Mana tak sedapnya, nasi ayam resepi Chef di hotel terkemuka. Memasak nasi ayam ni bukan susah, semua orang pun pandai memasak nasi ayam.

Taste of Bali : <b>Nasi Ayam</b> Bali | Sharon Travelogue

November 26, 2013 by Sharon Loh

Remember about the idea of me exploring more Indonesian local foods and write a series of blog post about Taste of Indonesia? Well, the first one went really well nearly a month ago. I wrote about BPK, the famous Karo-styled roast pig from North Sumatra, Indonesia. And everyone was like : "Look at that! You make me hungry." or "God! It does look really good. It's been ages since the last time I had BPK". Well, you know, things like that.

And for now, since I just got back from Bali, I'm gonna write a brief review about the famous Nasi Ayam Bali (Balinese Chicken Rice). I know.. I know.. People might be expecting that I write about Balinese Suckling Pig instead since that's the only thing people would probably think about Balinese dish. But I found it to be overrated. And besides, I like this Nasi Ayam even better!

So… what exactly is Nasi Ayam Bali?

Well… I found it to be a set of meal consisting of steam rice, Balinese shredded chicken, some vegetables, sate lilit (minced fish satay), peanuts, chicken skin, and a slice of boiled egg. Yes, it might not look tempting for some people. And without the veggies, it'll be too dry.

I didn't even think I'll finish mine at the first time. But then, I found myself enjoying every bite of it.

It tasted exactly like any other Balinese cooking – sweet, kinda spicy but not so much, and so rich in flavor of traditional herbs. And the taste of each ingredients somehow blend with each other really well. There are no part of the dish tasted stronger and more dominant than the other – that's what I call by The Taste of Bali. And the more important thing is… they use fresh ingredients! So it tasted just like what local dish should be. Fresh and authentic.

Balinese Nasi Campur

Balinese Nasi Campur

A part of Balinese cuisine you should never forget is the delicious sambal matahI love it! It's some kind of Balinese style raw sambal with Lombok chilli, onions, oils, and many other things.

Believe it or not? I never found nor heard about sambal matah else where. My first impression about sambal matah wasn't very great. It didn't look tasty at all for me. Instead, it looks really raw and oily. And it's a kind of complement you would want to put away. Not a kind of chili sauce you'll dip your chicken into. But later I found it to be a perfect sambal for both grilled chicken or fish.

Nasi Ayam Bali

I even asked my friend who's been living in Bali for years about how to make sambal matah at home. The basic ingredients are only Lombok chilies (it's small and fat), garlic, onions, lemon grass, and virgin coconut oil. But you can also use olive oil if you like the smell of it. And just like any other Indonesians, Balinese also loves to use grated terasi (dried shrimp paste) as one of the ingredients for making sambal matah. Just to build up a stronger flavor and smell.

Got a sense of what it tasted like?

Well, herbs and spices are very essential in Indonesian cookingBalinese is no exception. So you might find a complicated ingredients in Indonesian dish recipe. And each island does have their own local taste. Balinese cuisine usually has a rich flavor of herbs and a spicier taste than the one in Java island. While the local foods in Sumatra tend to be hot and spicy and rich of coconut milk.

Ah, Indonesia does offer so many kind of foods I can't refuse. I really can't wait for my next local food tasting experience!

Roasted chicken rice

From its humble beginning of a chicken rice and porridge stall along Old Klang Road in the 1960s, Nasi Ayam Chee Meng now has a chain of chicken rice shops in Klang Valley. rif and I went to the outlet in Old Klang Road. Certified halal, this fuss-free restaurant serves chicken rice (both steamed and roasted chicken), along with other local delights such as sambal prawns and kangkung belacan.

Tasty skin

I'm not a chicken rice fan but the kick ass ginger dip and chilli sauce are what draws me back to eat. And of course, the chicken — steamed or roasted (RM7.50 – chicken leg, RM7 – chicken breast), it's up to you. If you asked me, I'd say order both to try before deciding on which you like better. Sometimes, you might still be undecided because the roasted chicken skin is tasty, but the steamed chicken has a smoother texture.

Fiery sambal prawns

The sambal prawn is fiery hot and hurts so good. I was sweating buckets (and swearing a little) as I tucked into each spoonful. If you're a chilli wuss, stay away. No, run away haha! :P

Curry laksa

They also serve curry laksa, if you ever have bad cravings the way I do. That said, this curry laksa is more Malay style so it's a lot spicier. I finished my drink before I hit the half bowl mark. For RM9 per bowl, I found it pretty expensive but they were pretty generous with the ingredients.

Resepi <b>Nasi Ayam</b> Best – App Review | Buurps.com : Spontaneous <b>...</b>

We've seen quite many foodie apps from other parts of the world but that doesn't mean Buurps forgotten the local contributors.

An app with the name "Resepi Nasi Ayam Best" is obviously about the Malay style chicken rice.

app1

What I'm most disappointed about this app is that it had to use "Resepi 1″, "Resepi 2″, "Resepi 3″ instead of the name of the dish itself. :( What a bummer, perhaps it's a way to increase "ad view" but I think it just hurts their app as a whole. Let's just say short term gain, long term loss. :(

app2

The contents for each recipe looks good though, albeit some parts do look funny like say "Bahan-bahan (2-3 orang)" as it looks like "Ingredients (2 – 3 persons)" – get it? It's like an app for cannibals.

app3

And it would've been great if they placed some photos to show what the actual dish looks like, I'm sure many people not from Malaysia would be interested to know what we have. Heck, even locals would love to know more about the Malay chicken rice, I for one love the Malay chicken rice. :D

The app is available at Google Play.
