Roasted chicken rice

From its humble beginning of a chicken rice and porridge stall along Old Klang Road in the 1960s, Nasi Ayam Chee Meng now has a chain of chicken rice shops in Klang Valley. rif and I went to the outlet in Old Klang Road. Certified halal, this fuss-free restaurant serves chicken rice (both steamed and roasted chicken), along with other local delights such as sambal prawns and kangkung belacan.

Tasty skin

I'm not a chicken rice fan but the kick ass ginger dip and chilli sauce are what draws me back to eat. And of course, the chicken — steamed or roasted (RM7.50 – chicken leg, RM7 – chicken breast), it's up to you. If you asked me, I'd say order both to try before deciding on which you like better. Sometimes, you might still be undecided because the roasted chicken skin is tasty, but the steamed chicken has a smoother texture.

Fiery sambal prawns

The sambal prawn is fiery hot and hurts so good. I was sweating buckets (and swearing a little) as I tucked into each spoonful. If you're a chilli wuss, stay away. No, run away haha! :P

Cham ice

Curry laksa

They also serve curry laksa, if you ever have bad cravings the way I do. That said, this curry laksa is more Malay style so it's a lot spicier. I finished my drink before I hit the half bowl mark. For RM9 per bowl, I found it pretty expensive but they were pretty generous with the ingredients.

Nasi Ayam Bu Pini, Semarang - Blog Nasi - Blogger

If we talked about Nasi Ayam, well .. a lot of Nasi Ayam sellers in Semarang. The origin of Nasi Ayam was from Klaten, but it became popular in Semarang. And sometimes people said is the same as Nasi Liwet from Solo, but it's different. There were no small restaurants or warung in the sidewalk of the street, only a lady or simbok wandering around with bakul (wakul, like big wicker basket and covered with banana leaf to put rice) and shouting "Sego Ayaaaaammmmmm …". If we want to buy it, we just called her to stop at our house and we order it. Now that i remembered it .. it seems really nice … Eat in front of the house .. Sit on the floor .. good old time. The price of a pincuk (a portion) was used to be Rp 50,- and nowadays is around Rp 7000,- … rice, shredded chicken, tofu bacem, rambak, half egg, pour it with kuah santan and put santan kental a little.

Nasi Ayam, Semarang

If I'm not mistaken .. around 1989 .. there was a very famous Nasi Ayam called Karangkojo (the name of an alley), the taste a little bit modified into sweet taste and people loved it. People queued just to buy nasi ayam, in a packed small alley. And the others started to follow the pionneer.. they opened a lot of warungs of nasi ayam spread all over Semarang city. But there were some old fashioned sellers who still wandering around just like the old way. But I think there are no more Nasi Ayam sellers who wandering around anymore.

Nasi Ayam, Semarang

As I mentioned before, there are a lot of nasi ayam sellers in Semarang, and all of them have different tastes. Some of them are not good too, so be carefull. Nasi Ayam Bu Pini is one of the best seller in Semarang, the taste is good … in the middle of the sweet and original taste .. quite clean .. and warmhearted. The only downside is its already become a small restaurant since Indomaret buy the building where Bu Pini used to have her warung in front of it. So we can't feel the traditional anymore, but if it just for eating .. than it's the best.

How to Order
The standard of a portion is as I mentioned above, but usually I order differently. What I usually ordered is rice, one whole egg, shredded chicken, kuah santan, and santan kental.. thats it .. oh.. sometimes I asked for a spoon of spicy kuah (soup) just for fun factor, and it cost Rp 8000,-. So adding half egg will cost you Rp 1000,- more. People said that my order is like an Opor .. nnnnnnnot the same .. but maybe similar looks .. but different taste

BitterSweetSpicy: Ayam Goreng Lengkuas & Nasi Kuning

This delicious Galangal Fried Chicken is a great variation if you are thinking of having homemade fried chicken. I also cooked some yellow rice using the liquid from the half-cooked chicken so as not to waste it. The rice & chicken are already bursting with flavour, so I just served them with Tomato Sambal, the kind usually served with ayam penyet.

Ayam Goreng Lengkuas
(Galangal Fried Chicken)

Ingredients:
1 chicken ( weighing about 1 kg), cut into 8 pieces
4 tbsp shredded galangal
5 tbsp oil
2 salam leaves (or bay leaves as a substitute)
1 stalk lemongrass, bruised
oil for cooking & deep frying

Spice (ground):
3 gloves garlic
5 shallots
3 candlenuts, roasted
1 tsp tamarind
2 tsp chopped turmeric
salt & sugar

Method:

  1. Combine chicken with ground spices & shredded galangal & mix thoroughly.
  2. Heat about 3 tbsp of oil in a frying pan & add in the chicken. Add salam leaves & lemon grass. Cover the pan & fry over low heat, adding a little water if necessary.
  3. Remove the chicken when it is half-cooked. Drain the chicken & set aside the remaining liquid. Deep fry the chicken until golden brown.
  4. Serve the chicken with fried shredded galangal sprinkled on it.
Notes & modifications:
  1. After combining the chicken with the ground spices, I left it in the fridge for about 2 hours.
  2. I did not add any water when cooking the chicken as there was already a lot of water coming out from the chicken as I was cooking it. Once the chicken is half cooked, I removed the chicken & used the remaining liquid in the frying pan to cook yellow rice.

Nasi Kuning

Ingredients:

800g rice (I used basmati rice.)

2 tbsps shredded turmeric or 1 tbsp powdered turmeric

1 litre coconut milk from 1 coconut (discard the skin) -

1 tbsp salt

2 salam leaves (or bay leaves as a substitute)

2 stalks lemon grass, bruised

1 tbsp lime juice

Method:

  1. Wash & drain rice.
  2. Steam for 25 minutes until it is half-cooked. Then transfer to another saucepan.
  3. Soak the shredded turmeric in coconut milk. Add in salt, salam leaves, lemon grass & the liquid from the half-cooked chicken. Bring to a boil.
  4. Pour the boiled coconut milk onto the half-cooked rice, add lime juice & allow to simmer. Continute to stir until the liquid is completely absorbed. Then steam until thoroughly cooked.
Note: - I combined all the ingredients & cooked the rice in the electric rice cooker.

          - adjust the total amount of liquid accordingly.

Sambal Tomato

(Tomato Chilli Sauce)

Ingredients:
150g red chillies, seeded
6 shallots
2 cloves garlic
1 red tomato, chopped
½ tsp dried shrimp paste (belacan)
salt & sugar
2 tbsp oil
Sauté red chillies, shallots, garlic, tomato & shrimp paste until half-cooked. Set aside. Grind & add salt & sugar.

Located in S11 Coffeeshop which is just within walking distance from Bukit Batok Bus Interchange, Sedap Corner offers a Halal version of Hainanese Chicken Rice (Nasi Ayam). Though it was Halal Certified I thought it was rare as we seldom get to see Chinese working in the stall. In fact the one who prepared the meat was a chinese uncle.

If you are unsure of what to order, Sedap Corner had actually help to simplified the decision process by printing out a big banner with its available meal for you. With its delicious images of its meal and signature dishes, for sure that there will be one that suits you.

What to order?
Many of us may have a misconception that Hainan Chicken Rice serves chicken that is de-boned. To clear the thought for those who are still having such misconception, only Hainanese Boneless rice will have the bone taken off from the meat.

I had the special meal which comes with a good portion of rice and chicken, also with braised Tau Gua as well as half a slice of the egg. The skin of roasted chicken looks a little dry and tasted rather salty, not to my liking. However to average out the scores, their price was pretty fragrant and not too oily.

Nasi ayam - Nasi Ayam Hailam Damansara Utama @ Damansara Utama...

Nasi Ayam Hailam Damansara Utama @ Damansara Utama...

Posted: 11 Feb 2014 12:00 AM PST

I have heard a lot about this restaurant called Nasi Ayam Hailam Damansara Utama but never got the chance to try out the place until this evening. Located in the busy area of Damansara Utama, this restaurant has gained popularity among all races as it has the Halal status. In addition to that, this restaurant had been endorsed by the Jalan Jalan Cari Makan team some time ago and that has drawn more crowd to come here. This restaurant is affiliated to the other famous Nasi Ayam Hailam restaurant in Bukit Bintang as it belongs to the same family. To give a little background on this establishment, this restaurant belongs to a Chinese family that has been selling Chicken Rice for almost five decades. Originally started in some other area as Nasi Ayam Chee Meng in 1965, the grandchildren have now grown this business into a much larger chain in the Klang Valley.

Interior of the Restaurant

The restaurant is manned by Indonesian workers. The design is quite Hainanese in layout and furniture and there are a number of old musical instruments hung along the walls that add to the decor. I also found the restaurant to be very clean and it is air conditioned for customers comfort. They do not have any menu cards but you could take a peek at the meat station to get an idea of what they offer. Besides the Chicken Rice, they do offer a number of vegetable dishes as well as some Kerabu dishes. Ordering is done at the table and within minutes, the food is served.

Ice Lemon Tea @ RM 3.00

Their Ice Lemon Tea is priced at RM 3.00 per glass which is quite expensive. Taste wise, it was nice and not too sweet, just the way that I like it to be. I would rate this drink at 7.8/10 .

Yellow Oil Rice

It is good that they serve the authentic Yellow Oil Rice here. The portion of rice was huge and a much larger portion compared to the other Chicken Rice places out there. The rice was very good and had the right ingredients in it making it simply delicious. I would rate their rice at 9.4/10 .

Bowl of Clear Soup

With any set of Chicken Rice, a bowl of clear soup is served complimentary. The soup here was heavily infused with spices and black pepper and it was delicious. I ended up asking for another bowl and they served me without any fuss. Definitely good stuff and I would rate this at 9.3/10 .

Steamed & Roasted Chicken @ RM 13.00

Any set comes with only one variety of Chicken and as I wanted to try both types, there were additional charges. The basic set of Steamed Chicken with the rice was priced at RM 7.00 and the additional portion of Roasted Chicken was priced at RM 6.00 . For me, this was not too much and I guess any heavy eater would want two portions as just one portion of the meat would not be sufficient and coming to think of it, to pay RM 13 for just Chicken Rice per meal is definitely on the high side.

Roasted Chicken

Their Roasted Chicken was nice but not mind blowing. The meat was juicy but it did not have the wow factor. I would rate their Roast Chicken at 8/10 .

Steamed Chicken

Their Steamed Chicken on the other hand was excellent. Everything was just perfect and the meat was tender and juicy making you crave for more. I would rate their Steamed Chicken at 9.4/10 .

Ginger Sauce

Their Ginger Sauce was excellent and addictive. It was wonderfully prepared and was perfectly balanced. A must try Sauce here and this deserves a rating of 9.5/10 .

Homemade Chili Paste

This was another sauce that was absolutely heavenly. Being a big fan of chili, this was a heavenly sent dish. It was super spicy and just a slight dip would definitely jerk some tears. Excellently prepared and deserves a rating of 9.8/10 .

Kailan in Oyster Sayce @ RM 8.00

Very Fresh Kailan Used

I was contemplating if I should try their Chicken Feet or their Kailan and went for their Kailan. No regrets, the dish though simple, was delicious. The greens were very fresh and it had a lavish amount of Oyster Sauce. The portion was huge too. I would rate this dish at 9.5/10 .

In summary, I was definitely impressed with all the dishes here except for the Roasted Chicken which was not bad either, but it just didn't impress me enough. The price is slightly on the high side and that must be due to the high rental in this area. Otherwise, it is definitely a place that I would return again.
